The ninth princess has just been added to the Disney princesses, Princess Tiana from the new movie The Princess and the Frog.
The movie is an adaption of the book The Frog Princess, which was loosely based on the Grimm brother's tale "The Frog Prince." Princess Tiana starts out as just an ordinary girl, working to one day own her own restaurant. While at a costume party dressed as a princess, she is mistaken for one by the frog prince. Thus the adventurous tale begins!
This movie offers great costumes for kids to dress up in. While many of the Disney princesses are dressed in pale pink and blues, Princess Tiana looks more like Tinkerbelle in a pale earthy green. This brings a whole new color into the princess clothes!
Although Princess Tiana spends the majority of the movie in the form of a frog, she wears a pale blue dress to the ball (think Cinderella). At the end of the movie, when Tiana becomes a true princess, she wears a strapless pale green gown with a full poofy skirt. While Tiana's gown is a full-length skirt, it's important to note that the costumes for kids that are being modeled after this new Disney princess are typically knee-length.
Princess Tiana adds more diversity to the Disney princesses, since she is the first Africa-American princess. She will join Mulan and Pocahontas as an ethnic Disney princess. There have been a lot of mixed feelings concerning Tiana's ethnicity, but overall she has been accepted with open arms and has created a hit new movie. It is exciting to watch Disney morph to accept and celebrate other cultures as it continues to find old fairytales to base movies on. The unique thing about Disney princesses is that they are role models for little girls because of their virtues and beliefs, typically because of the type of story that they are based on. If you want your little girl to look up to the new Disney princess and the things that she stands for, make sure to get a dress for your girl to dress up in! After all, what better way to have your daughter mimic the positive behaviors she learns on screen than to have her act them out at home?
The princess clothes for Princess Tiana have been flying off the shelves. Her dress intertwines aspects from nature, like the pale colors and a flower, and brings to it a royal twist. Her tall tiara and long, arm-length gloves make the outfit a complete success. These accessories are crucial for playing dress ups! You can find long gloves at any dress store, and although Princess Tiana's tiara is green, any tall tiara will work.
